June 21, 2009

This is High Overlord Saurfang, my favorite NPC Dad. He’s defended Orgrimmar and lead the front against that Ahn’Qiraj mess. Now he’s in Northrend, guiding the war against the Lich King and trying desperately to keep Garrosh from messing everything up.

Saurfang and the character that's not the mage.

Saurfang and the character that's not the mage.

Here’s what he has to say about himself:

Saurfang: “I am Saurfang. Brother of Broxigar. You know me to be the Supreme Commander of the Might of Kalimdor. An orc – a true orc warrior – wishes for one thing: To die in the glory of battle against a hated enemy. Some of you have fought in battles. Peace has been with us for many years. Many years we sat idle but many years we battled. In those years – where strife the land and Legion and Scourge sacked our homes, killed our families – these insects dwelled beneath us. Beneath our homes – waiting. Waiting to crush the life from our little ones. To slay all in their path. This they do for their god. And for our gods? We defend. We stand. We show that as one. United. We destroy. Their god will fall. To die today, on this field of battle, is to die an orcish death. To die today is to die for our little ones. Our old ones. Our… loved ones. Would any of you deny yourselves such a death? Such an honor?” (WoWWiki)

His own “Little One” is Saurfang the Younger, whom you first meet in Outland. In Wrath of the Lich King, Junior is the head of the Kor’kron Vanguard and leads them into battle with the Lich King, proudly wearing the armor his father gave him.

Spoiler ahead…

Saurfang the Younger dies in that battle, and the Lich King takes his soul. You are tasked by the Alexstraza the Dragon Queen to return his armor to his father. I’ve done many a quest in this game on both Alliance and Horde sides. None of them choked me up like this one. You deliver to a father the worst news he can imagine — the loss of his child.

Saurfang: My heart… my strength…

Happy Father’s Day to all of you gamer dads who control Nature’s furies with one hand while tying shoes with the other and who sacrifice fat lootz for family dinners and bedtime stories.

You are elite!

I’ve been through that quest twice now, and I got choked up both times. Saurfang has been one of my favorite NPCs since the AQ events, and I’m very glad that they’ve given him such a position of prominence in Wrath.

    Lok’tar ogar!

man you are like sissies so what??? it is just a cool 3d epic mmorpg game its not real life! Do you cry every time you kill a mob? or wen someone kills your character or someone of your friends’ ? if so then no offense but you gotta go to a psychician or tell ur mummy dat u drug urself so she will ground you to the basement without a PC.

Happy Father’s day and if your child has been killled by a crazed lunatic evil zombie witch king and drained his soul den go cry under a dumpster or follow his faith!

Wow, you’re an intense one, Mr. Death Knight! Going back 4 months to find a post you can rage against? Grats on that!

Sure, it’s just a game and no, I don’t cry everytime I kill a mob. If you are emotionally unable to process the difference between killing 10 spiders and having to inform a (yes, fictional) father of his son’s death than you need to turn off the computer and participate in the real world a bit.

And it’s “Lich King” instead of “Witch King.” Nub.
